Managing a team, or in our case, an orchestra, is often a complex task. The responsibility a manager has towards the musicians they lead is the primary role in making things work perfectly. However, human resources are the most challenging element to manage because it involves different personalities and issues. To achieve good efficiency, a manager needs to consider several aspects:

  1. Open and Empathetic Communication: Every manager must establish an open channel of communication with the orchestra members. They should listen to and understand pertinent issues. Managers should listen to the orchestra’s opinions, understand their aspirations, and be open to suggestions. Creating a direct communication line will undoubtedly improve the atmosphere within the team.

  4. Personal Inspiration: Like any leader, you are, first and foremost, a role model. Your attitude and actions should inspire the people you lead. You should continually demonstrate passion, dedication, and excellence to expect the same from the entire orchestra. These attributes are essential to reach the highest possible level together.
  5. Skill Development and Continuous Learning: As humans, we learn and grow throughout our lives, adapting to the dynamics of our society. Continuous learning within the orchestra is vital. Therefore, as a manager, you should encourage ongoing learning and development, offering practical opportunities for orchestra members to improve. You could subsidize participation in continuous training courses or bring courses to your institution so that all orchestra members can benefit from them.

These are just a few pieces of advice to consider when leading and managing a team of individuals. Also, remember that maintaining a relaxed atmosphere is equally important, and any conflicts that arise should be mediated by you as the manager.
